This lantern is extremely well made.
I have taken this backpacking on many hikes in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The design is reliable and high performance output from such a compact design. The swing out legs make it quite stable. The electronic ignition is reliable and very convenient. The adjustment for brightness is very linear with a wide range. Being able to use it without a mantle may not give you the light you desire but it allows the lantern to be used when a damaged mantle can not be replaced in the field.
Full disclosure, my sample is branded Brunton Glorb but is exact to the Soto in every way so it is my assumption that Brunton sourced and rebranded the Soto lantern for a short time. When I couldn’t source mantles for a “Brunton Glorb” it went on the shelf. I am very happy now that I have found Soto and plan to buy a new Compact Soto Lantern to give as a gift!

Thank you for your comments. You are correct. Some time ago SOTO did private label this lantern for Brunton. Unfortunately, SOTO no longer manufacturers the lantern. However, the mantles are still available–and will be available for some time.

I love this lantern! My wife and I set outside most nights and watch the sunset. We use the lantern on the table so we have some light without being so bright that it interferes with seeing the sunset. It is good for hiking as well. I took it on a back country hike of the Grand Canyon where we are not allowed to have a campfire. I was in a group of 4 and we sat around this little light and used it as our camp fire. Everyone was happy I brought it as all of them just had LED head lamps.

Thank you for your comments. Love the use of your lantern. Unfortunately, SOTO no longer manufacturers this lantern–because everyone seems to go for the LED head lamps. Maybe, if we receive more comments such as yours, the company may reconsider their decision. Please know that the mantles are still available for the latern–and will be for quite some time.

As i am writing this review the lantern is on my table and lit. I absolutely love it, i have used it for over 4 years now on many camping trips and it has never failed me. Especially when i take to the outdoors on my motorcycle i consider every item in my backpack carefully but the little lantern makes it every time. Sure i pack my LED headlight, but in the evening when i sit and enjoy a small single malt whikey… this is my companion! Hope someday they will be manufactured again.
